Mickey is a lifelong Calgarian and he and his wife are currently raising their three children there. He also serves as the Minister of Justice. He is the son of longtime politician Moe Amery, who served as a Progressive Conservative MLA for 22 years in Calgary-East. Operating a small law office in East Calgary, Mickey practices in the areas of family and real estate law.
