MLA: Hon. Amrik Virk – Surrey-Tynehead – Minister of Advanced Education (Demo)

Dear Lord, our prayer today is for MLA: Honorable Amrik Virk. Thank You for working in and through his leadership to promote security and peace. We pray that You would help him to gain quick understanding of complex issues so he can provide solutions that are just. We ask that You will use his gifts to promote respect for lawful authority so our province will be strong, stable and prosperous. Give him fresh insights and strategies as Minister of Advanced Education. We ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.

Amrik Virk was elected as MLA in the riding of Surrey-Tynehead and appointed Minister of Advanced Education in June 2013. He is also a member of the Cabinet Committee on Secure Tomorrow.

Virk’s extensive career with the RCMP included a variety of policing duties, including substantial experience with various First Nations communities. In 2001, Virk was commissioned to the rank of Inspector and posted to Surrey. There he was active in the issue of youth and gang violence in communities throughout the Lower Mainland and worked extensively with community leaders to help create the British Columbia Integrated Gang Task force.

He left the Surrey RCMP in 2006 while serving as the acting Officer in Charge of Operations and transferred to Langley as the Officer in Charge of Operations.

Virk is an active community volunteer. In the six years he spent on the board of directors of the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation he helped raise millions of dollars for enhancing health care for Surrey residents. He has also served on the board of Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
