MLA: Hon. Amrik Virk – Surrey-Tynehead – Minister of Advanced Education (Demo)

Father, we pray for the Honourable Amrik Virk today and thank you for his life. We appreciate his willingness to serve his province as an MLA and the sacrifice he makes in both time and energy. Please be near his family and Amrik in their times together this fall season. In Your precious name, Amen.

Amrik Virk was elected as MLA in the riding of Surrey-Tynehead in June 2013. He was appointed Minister of Advanced Education June 10, 2013.

As Minister for Advanced Education, Virk oversees 25 public post-secondary universities, colleges and institutes, a number of private institutions as well as hundreds of private career training schools.

During his first year of office, Virk helped guide the development of B.C.’s Skills for Jobs Blueprint, implemented the creation of B.C.’s first public school of traditional Chinese medicine and continued the expansion of the number of free, open textbooks for post-secondary students.

Before his election, Virk had an extensive career with the RCMP that included a variety of policing duties. In 2001, Virk was commissioned to the rank of inspector and posted to Surrey, where he was active on a range of community issues throughout the Lower Mainland.

Virk also spent six years on the board of directors of the Surrey Memorial Hospital Foundation and served on the board of Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
