Simon Gibson was elected as MLA for Abbotsford-Mission 2013 and re-elected MLA in 2017. He served as the Parliamentary Secretary for Independent Schools to the Minister of Education, and was a member of Treasury Board and the Pacific Northwest Economic Region Committee. He has been a member of the Select Standing Committees on Public Accounts, Finance and Government Services, and Education.
Simon has been a resident of the Fraser Valley since 1976 and has lived in the Abbotsford-Mission riding for over 14 years. He taught at the University of the Fraser Valley School of Business, specializing in Human Resources Management, Entrepreneurship and Marketing. He previously taught professional communications at Trinity Western University and Douglas College. He has led workshops for the BC Police Academy (Justice Institute of BC) and Western Washington University.
Simon is a graduate of four universities, with degrees including an honours degree in journalism from Carleton University in Ottawa and a Ph.D. from Simon Fraser University in education, specifically curriculum theory and implementation.
Prior to his election to the Legislature, Simon served on Abbotsford Council for three decades and was active on numerous boards and committees throughout the valley, including the Parks and Recreation Commission, Fraser Valley Regional District Board, Fraser Valley Regional Library Board, and the Abbotsford-Mission Transit Committee, where he served as chair.
Simon previously wrote a syndicated human resources advice column, Office Politics 101, which appeared in 25 B.C. newspapers. Simon is married to Joy, his wife of 40 years, and they have two adult daughters and three grandsons.
